Designing your balcony

Explore inspiration and tips for designing your balcony.

Imagine this: a warm summer evening with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the city. And there, high above the city's hustle and bustle, is your cozy balcony. Are you curious how you can best decorate your balcony? Although balconies don't offer much space for a full lounge or patio set, there are plenty of options that fit within the limited space. Create a cozy atmosphere on your balcony with outdoor furniture, accessories, and, of course, plants. We provide you with handy tips for creating an inviting balcony.

Designing your balcony in 3 steps

As soon as the sun starts shining in the spring, you want to go outside and enjoy the nice weather on your balcony. No matter how small your balcony is, you can style it to your liking. Make the most of the available space. There are also several ways to make your balcony appear larger. Before you start decorating, follow these 3 steps:

  1. Determine your style. Because your balcony is an extension of your home, it's understandable that you want the same style on your balcony as inside your home. If you're still looking for inspiration, check out our overview of different garden styles.
  2. What is the main purpose of your balcony? Are you aiming to craft a snug little garden where you can indulge your gardening passion, or do you simply want a place to unwind? A blend of both is also an option!
  3. Consider how many people typically use your balcony. Any children or pets? If so, make sure to consider adding extra safety measures.

Step 1: Garden furniture for your balcony

Have you answered the above questions for yourself? Then it's time to look for suitable garden furniture. We're looking for a functional way to utilize the entire balcony, so avoid choosing overly large pieces. If you don't have the desire to dine outdoors but want to use your balcony mainly for relaxation, you can opt for a lounge sofa. We have various lounge sofas in our collection for you to choose from.

Complete your set with a half pouf or side tables

You can choose to add a half pouf or several Gili side tables. This way, you have different options and still save space. Use the half pouf to put your feet up after a long day. The Gili tables can be used to place your drink or snack. We offer these tables in different sizes, so you can always choose the right height.

If these options still take up too much space, you can place a flexible tray on your sofa. This way, you always have a table nearby.

Height-adjustable table: multifunctional

Looking to combine lounging and dining? Opt for an adjustable-height table. This allows you to use the table for dining as well as lounging. We offer this table in various sizes. You can choose from different tabletops that best match your balcony. Consider the tiles on your balcony, window frames, and even curtains or balustrades.

You'll also need to decide between lounge chairs or dining chairs. Lounge chairs are often more comfortable, allowing you to relax in them. However, dining chairs are more compact.

A garden set for your balcony

If you enjoy dining outdoors, a dining set is a good choice. We have various sizes available in this category as well. Take the Concept garden table, for example. This table comes in different sizes. You can add 2 or 4 chairs to it. Pay attention to the dimensions here. Allow for an additional 60 to 70 cm for each chair. You should be able to push the garden chair back and still walk around the table when someone is sitting down at the table.

Step 2. Space for greenery

Now that you've chosen the basic garden furniture, it's time to add some greenery. Garden furniture alone isn't enough to create a cozy balcony. A bit of green is needed! To make the most of the limited space you have, we recommend using height for your plants. This is called vertical gardening. Attach flower boxes to the side of your balcony and place various plants in them.

There are also special bags with compartments that you can attach to the wall. Fill the pockets with soil and plants. A vertical garden even allows you to start a small vegetable garden! Easy plants to start with are herbs like basil and thyme or a strawberry plant. All your plants need is water and love!

Step 3. Finish your balcony with accessories

Use fun accessories to add some extra coziness and warmth to your balcony. Place cheerful decorative cushions on your garden chairs and drape a few throws on your lounge sofa. Have you ever considered an outdoor rug? An outdoor rug can withstand the weather and dries quickly. With some garden lighting and candles, you can complete your balcony. This way, you can enjoy a beautifully lit balcony even late in the evening.
